Background
I am a graphic designer living in Arlington, Virginia. I graduated from Skidmore College with a major in art, concentrating in graphic design and drawing, and a minor in Asian studies. My studies included a semester abroad at Nanzan University in Japan. Since college, I have continued to expand my skills by pursuing a degree in Information Technology at Northern Virginia Community College. In addtion, I have taken continuing education courses in Interactive Web Design at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. I also sell my work at craft fairs. I enjoy incorporating drawing into graphic and interactive design projects. The design programs I use most are: Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Flash, and Dreamweaver.
I love drawing, reading science fiction and comics, creating origami, and watching crime and science fiction television shows (my favorites are Numbers and Doctor Who). I also like to listen to music, especially Japanese Indies groups that I first heard in Japan (Inugami Circus Dan, Ichigo Rock, D).
Philosophy
Before I start working on a project, I enjoy thinking about the pieces in nature that fit together to create a richer whole. I am especially interested in the natural world because of the way art grows and evolves from a single element on the page. For example, when I’m creating a pattern, I start with a single shape. This then suggests to me how a second element should fit with the first. The composition continues to grow in this fashion until it evolves into the final work of art.
When I create a design for a client, I take the subject matter and figure out how to best represent it in visual form. As with my individual work, I try to fit text and images together in interesting ways, while still presenting information clearly. I spend time in the planning stages to make sure that my client’s needs are met and that my concepts fit in with the company’s image.
